Urban · Necropolis

The city kept walking after it died. Bone and rot and old hexes shuffle the streets of the Necropolis, and its priests still preach to congregations of the dead.

Ash Rat Swarm, a beast of the Necropolis.

Ash Rat Swarm

BeastTier 1

The gutter empties itself at you.

Grey and countless, they pour out of the drains in a wave that is up your leg before you can step back. One torch does more here than any blade.

Gutter Ghoul, a undead of the Necropolis.

Gutter Ghoul

UndeadTier 1

It has been eating what the city leaves out.

Thin, quick and low to the ground, it scuttles the alleys on all fours and is on you the moment you turn a corner. Rot and shadow are its natural weather; fire and the arcane are what it fears.

Smog Wisp, a spirit of the Necropolis.

Smog Wisp

SpiritTier 1

The smoke has an opinion about you.

A knot of bad air hanging over the dead streets, drifting just out of reach and spitting soot that burns to breathe. Swing at it and you only part it — hex it and it comes apart for good.

Trash Golem, a construct of the Necropolis.

Trash Golem

ConstructTier 1

Everything the city threw away, standing up.

Bin-metal, brick and rag compacted into a shambling mass that neither bleeds nor hurries. Blades vanish into the heap and rot does nothing — burn it, or unspeak the hex that stacked it.

Weak Skeleton, a undead of the Necropolis.

Weak Skeleton

UndeadTier 1

A blade and a grudge and not much else.

Picked clean and propped up by the Necropolis, it lunges fast and breaks faster. Mind the quick tell, then end it with flame — it has no flesh left to fear a blade.

Weak Zombie, a undead of the Necropolis.

Weak Zombie

UndeadTier 1

It forgot how to fall down.

Barely held together by the corruption's habit, this one comes apart at a firm blow. Still, do not let the slow ones crowd you, and remember that flame ends them where a blade only scatters the pieces.

Wire Crawler, a construct of the Necropolis.

Wire Crawler

ConstructTier 1

The cable bundle uncoiled and came looking.

A knot of severed cabling that runs on a dozen whipping legs and goes for the eyes. Steel just parts strands and multiplies the problem — fire welds the whole mess shut.

Junkyard Hound, a construct of the Necropolis.

Junkyard Hound

ConstructTier 2

It still guards a yard that burned down years ago.

Welded together from scrap and old loyalty, it charges the length of the street with its jaw already open. Plate laughs at a blade; heat warps the frame, and a hex ends the order it is still following.

Mannequin Stalker, a construct of the Necropolis.

Mannequin Stalker

ConstructTier 2

It was in the window this morning.

Blank, smooth and always a little closer than it was, it does not move while you are watching and does not stop when you are not. Blades skate off the lacquer — fire blisters it, and a hex empties whatever moved in.

Medium Skeleton, a undead of the Necropolis.

Medium Skeleton

UndeadTier 2

It learned a little death-magic, and forgot everything else.

Rattling through half-remembered hexes, this one keeps its distance and flings cold malice from afar. Close the gap fast; fire and the arcane scatter brittle bone across the flagstones.

Medium Zombie

UndeadTier 2

Bloated on a century of the grave.

Heavier and harder to drop, it swings with the dumb strength of dead muscle that never tires. Poison wastes itself against it — bring fire, or burn out your arm trying.

Neon Wraith, a spirit of the Necropolis.

Neon Wraith

SpiritTier 2

A dead sign still advertising something.

It flickers along the shopfronts in colours the city has no power left to make, and it burns the eyes to look at directly. A blade goes through the glow and out the other side; only the arcane or the dark will put it out.

Rebar Wretch, a construct of the Necropolis.

Rebar Wretch

ConstructTier 2

The building came down. Part of it got up.

Twisted steel rod and set concrete in the rough shape of a man, dragging itself out of the rubble and swinging what used to be an arm. Cutting at it is pointless — fire softens the frame, and a hex drops the whole rusted lot.

Scaffold Golem, a construct of the Necropolis.

Scaffold Golem

ConstructTier 2

Three storeys of pipework, walking.

A lattice of clamps and poles that shrugs, and a wall comes down somewhere behind it. Blows ring off the tubing and rot cannot touch it; heat buckles the joints, and the arcane unbolts it.

Signal Specter, a caster of the Necropolis.

Signal Specter

CasterTier 2

Something is still broadcasting, and it knows your name.

It stands in the dead air of the exchange and pushes a hex out through wires that stopped carrying anything years ago, and its wards drink the arcane whole. Walk through the noise and put a blade in it.

Ashen Matron, a caster of the Necropolis.

Ashen Matron

CasterTier 3

She is still counting her dead, and she has room for you.

Veiled in grave-ash, she raises the fallen with a gesture and turns aside every hex you send her way. Her wards have no answer for steel — close the ground while the congregation is still standing up.

Cinderblock Brute, a brute of the Necropolis.

Cinderblock Brute

BruteTier 3

Built like a wall, hits like the building.

Grey, square and entirely without hurry, it walks through whatever you put in front of it and swings arms of set masonry. Blades powder against that — a hex is the only thing that reaches what is inside.

Leader Skeleton, a caster of the Necropolis.

Leader Skeleton

CasterTier 3

It conducts the bone-choir from the front.

A skeletal magus that rallies the dead with raised staff and droning hex, its wards turning the arcane aside. But it is fragile bone beneath the bravado, and a blade through the chant ends both.

Leader Zombie, a brute of the Necropolis.

Leader Zombie

BruteTier 3

It marshals the dead by sheer dead weight.

Something in the rot still issues orders, and the shambling ranks lurch to obey this one. A bruise of a creature that shrugs off steel, it is best undone with a hex that scatters the procession's conductor.

The Pale Hierophant, a caster of the Necropolis.

The Pale Hierophant

CasterTier 4Boss

It preaches a sermon only the dead attend.

Once the Necropolis had a high priest, and death only promoted him. The Pale Hierophant raises whole congregations of bone with a gesture, his wards turning the arcane to mist — so silence the sermon the one way left to you: a blade, up close, through the prayer.

Tower Tyrant

ConstructTier 4Boss

A block of the city stood up and took a name.

Storeys tall, iron-shod and grinding, it walks the Necropolis on legs that were load-bearing pillars this morning. Nothing you can swing will matter — fire the frame, and unwrite the hex holding all that weight upright.

Void Seraph

FloaterTier 4Boss

An angel turned inside out by the dark.

It descends on the Necropolis trailing too many wings and a halo of absence, beautiful in the way a wound is beautiful. Frost fouls its terrible grace, and a heavy enough blow casts the seraph back down.
